What to Expect When Framing a Detached Garage in Saskatoon

A detached garage is one of the best investments you can make in a Saskatoon property. Extra storage, a workshop, vehicle protection — the reasons are obvious. But what actually goes into framing one? Here's a straightforward breakdown.

Step 1: Permits and Planning

Before any framing begins, you'll need a building permit from the City of Saskatoon. Your garage builders will help determine the right size, setbacks from property lines, and whether the structure requires engineered drawings.

Step 2: The Slab

Framing starts after the concrete slab is poured and cured — typically a few days to a week depending on conditions. The slab forms the base that wall framing is anchored to.

Step 3: Wall Framing

This is where the structure comes to life. Wall plates are cut and laid out, then studs are nailed in at 16" on centre. Door and window openings are framed with headers sized for the span. In Saskatoon, we build to handle the snow loads and wind loads required by the Saskatchewan Building Code.

Step 4: Roof Framing

Roof trusses are typically prefabricated and craned into place. The pitch, overhang, and style (gable, hip, shed) are determined during planning. Trusses are sheathed with OSB before roofing begins.

Step 5: Sheathing

Wall sheathing goes on after the roof is framed. This ties the structure together and provides the base for siding and wrapping.

How Long Does It Take?

A standard 24x24 double garage typically takes 5–10 working days to frame, sheath, and roof — weather permitting. We aim to get the shell watertight as quickly as possible.
